compact-monopod Stoney Point® Compact Telescoping Monopod Nice but.......

Review Date: February 8, 2008
Reviewer: S. Guthauser,
A very well made monopod that was designed as a walking stick with a "Y" on top to act as a gun rest. Only problem is that it's only about 4' tall. This means that you must get down on one knee to use it as a gun rest. Not all that bad, as I said : very well made , however be warned that if you prefer to shoot "offhand" it won't work . Oh, for rocky areas bring a knee pad......

compact-monopod Manfrotto 680 COMPACT MONOPOD - Monopod Super sturdy!

Review Date: November 17, 2003
Reviewer: Michael J. Palmer, Houston, TX
Bought this monopod last week. Excellent construction. Weight is perfect, balance is perfect. Was able to take super clear 3 second exposures. Extends tall enough where I can look straight into the viewfinder on my Canon 300D (I'm 5'9"). It's light enough to carry in hand for a 4 hour hike, and heavy enough to beat the tar out of anyone trying to steal my gear!
compact-monopod Manfrotto 680 COMPACT MONOPOD - Monopod Durable, light and tall

Review Date: September 11, 2004
Reviewer: David Liu, Westford, MA USA
I tried out this monopod in a store and was impressed with it immediately for several reasons. It's light! It's short when compressed and TALL when pulled out. I'm 6' 1" and it puts my camera at my eye level when fully extended. When you hold it and prod at it in person, you can tell that this is a quality product.

Downside? It does not come with a head.(I'm not sure if the other monopods do)

Being a fairly new photographer by hobby, I had a vague idea what that meant when the salesman told me. The head is an attachment(some tripods if not all have this) that directly connects your camera with the monopod/tripod. It's usually a ball mechanism that is gripped and allows you to angle the camera whichever way you want. You don't need it, but it affords a bit more flexibility with your shots.

You can't really go wrong with something that does what it's suppose to do right and is durable and practical. 5 stars.
compact-monopod Manfrotto 680 COMPACT MONOPOD - Monopod Solid upgrade.

Review Date: September 27, 2009
Reviewer: Jack Blanke,
My first monopod was of the department store variety that was a bit underbuilt for a 40D and the Canon 24-70, f2.8 that I normally carry around. The 680B stands up to the load of heavier gear and provides a better sense of security for the investment mounted on it. Its sturdier feel also results in greater stability in low light shooting which was, after all, the reason for its purchase. Joints feel solid when locked...no wobble. This piece of gear is obviously well machined and I expect to enjoy it for many years. I use a mono more than a tripod and I have really appreciated the improvement over my previous stick. The 680B was a very effective upgrade to my gear kit and it was comfortably affordable. I highly recommend it.
compact-monopod Manfrotto 680 COMPACT MONOPOD - Monopod Great, if you have big and heavy gear

Review Date: January 7, 2007
Reviewer: Jeffrey Keeton, Birimgham, AL USA
This is a serious bit of kit. It's meant for professionals who shoot with big and heavy lenses and cameras, like a 500 mm. It is very stout and works great. If you have a need for extra stability and support, and don't want to shell out big $$$ for a carbon-fiber monopod then this is a worth considering. If you only need medium support for your amateur level camera (i.e. Canon Digital Rebel or similar ) then I would recommend other Bogen/Manfratto products that weigh less

compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak Not bad for the price

Review Date: August 5, 2006
Reviewer: S. Watanabe,
I give this monopod four stars simply because it is a pretty good product for the price (which is relatively low). I like this monopod because it collapses to just about the smallest size you are going to find in a monopod. Because it is so small, light and narrow it fits easily on the outside of my waistpack that I use to hold my digital camera and camcorder or fits very easily into my daypack or overnight bag. It is so small and easy to carry that I find I have a greater tendency to bring it with me places and use it a lot to steady long zoom shots on my camcorder. This monopod has made the quality of my home videos so much better by reducing the annoying jitteriness that you will invariably find with the camcorder zoomed way out. There is a fair amount of flex in the monopod leg but other than the fact that it is not a strong and durable leg, the flex has never been a problem for me shooting video. Again, it is not the smoothest and sleekest product out there but for the money it does just fine.
compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak Very Compact and Nice for the Price

Review Date: December 3, 2008
Reviewer: F. Royse, PA, United States
I bought this monopod at a mall camera shop and have been quite pleased with it. I use it primarily with a Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2. As other reviewers have mentioned, the last 3 segments of this 6-segment monopod do not lock but are held in place by spring-loaded ball bearings. I actually like this feature because it allows the monopod to collapse more compactly than others, at just over 16 inches. It also makes it faster and easier to open and collapse. Fully extended, I measure it at 60 3/4 inches, or just over 5 feet. I'm 6 feet tall and often find that I don't need to extend the last segment when using the Sanyo Xacti. It's exactly 53" without the last segment extended. The purpose of a monopod is to stabilize the camera, primarily in the vertical plane, to reduce blur. This monopod does a good job at that. It may not be the strongest on the market, and it does wobble a little with all segments extended, but it still does a great job for its intended use. It's light and compact and includes a very nice metal ball head. I learned from the other reviews that the head is removable, which I never realized! The rubber foot has a hole in the bottom about 3/8" in diameter that might be compatible with a metal spike (not included). Overall, I think this monopod is great for the price I paid (a double sawbuck).
compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak Sunpak Monopod Review

Review Date: July 3, 2010
Reviewer: DaveShafer,
I have had this monopod for several years. My favorite feature is the belt clip and the neck strap. I primarily use the monopod when videoing soccer games or kids music events. The belt clip feature with the neck strap allows for a very stable platform and easy maneuverability. I have found I can video a soccer game and not watch the camera most of the time by just keeping my body and camera facing the action. This works much better than trying to have the mono-pod on the ground.

Unfortunately I lost the belt clip, then the bottom of the monopod broke off. I still use it, but it is not as comfortable without the belt clip. The clip that holds the neck strap is made of relatively weak metal and mine keeps bending and I would have to bend it back. Eventually it resulted in me losing the adjustable neck strap that came with the monopod. Also, the adjustment feature on the neck strap broke which made it less convienient for adjusting the neck strap length for various situations. I replaced the neck strap with another one that works okay.

I agree with some of the other reviewers that the bottom several sections tend to collapse, so I don't use the monopod extended very often.

The ball head works well for being able to adjust the camera angle easily.

Bottom line is that the monopod is not the most rugged, but I haven't been able to find another one that has the belt clip and adjustable neck strap and ball head and I really like those features. I would love to find just a two section monopod with those features that had a rugged build...

The Monopod that I ordered was a gift for my grown son. He told me just what kind and what number so I couldn't miss. The one complaint that I have is that I wanted it here for Christmas but it did not arrive until a day or two after.

He is pleased with the product and that makes me pleased.
compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak Half way there

Review Date: April 26, 2006
Reviewer: K. Harris, So Cal
Was looking for an inexpenside monopod for my camcorder. Found this item at a local big box store, the OEM Sunpak Model 620-450bb version.

Took the first one back because it was missing the belt clip which is one of the more appealing features. After exchanging for another one, finally had some time to check it out.

Major drawback: The top two sections twist lock, BUT the bottom three sections are telescopic, and do not lock. Those 2ft 3in telescoping sections are held in place with protruding bearings.

They offer collapsing 'resistance', but do not twist lock.

The telescoping sections will only offer significant resistance IF you extend the second/lowest twist section.

Cannot be used as a 'walking stick'.....

I gave it three stars just because of the belt clip feature, but other than that was disappointed.
compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak The ballhead is the best part of this monopod

Review Date: June 8, 2008
Reviewer: alohadave, Quincy, Ma United States
I got this monopod at a big box retailer, and the best part is the removable ball head. It unscrews off the monopod and is threaded for standard 1/4-20 tripod screws. Useful if you need a cheap ballhead for something else.

Review Date: July 2, 2006
Reviewer: Mark W4CHL, Central NC United States
Agree with other reviewers: save your money on this monopod. The belt clip and the pan/tilt head are the only saving graces. I realized that most of the time with lightweight digital cams don't even need it to balance the 'pod and camera on my belt.

Got the Opteka instead - much more solidly built, has a shoulder pouch. I had a Leica table top tripod from years ago and added the head to the pod instead of this one.

compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak Spend more money on something better

Review Date: October 7, 2005
Reviewer: Marc A. Healy, Elgin, IL United States
There were cheaper monopods out there. I spent a bit more money expecting more, but I didn't get it. The lowest extension arms don't have locking mechanisms based on tension- you extend them by yanking them out and then cram them back in. It's based on pressure, like a socket wrench. There are spring-loaded ball bearings that snap the arms into place. The upper part of the monopod stays in place because you screw the tubes tight. Basically, if you put much pressure on the pod the bottom arms will fold on you. A major pain. No good for use as a walking stick and inconvenient as a camera mount. It's inexpensive though, but you can do better price-wise.
compact-monopod QSX Compact Monopod by Sunpak Poorly constructed

Review Date: November 22, 2009
Reviewer: Kennth C. Schneider,
Although this product does not claim to heavy-duty, the first one I bought sometimes collapsed under its own weight. The ball head is sturdy, but the lowest most sections are supported by spring catches that are very weak. The upper two segments are sturdy, which work for the feature that I like, the "belt hook" that permits me to rest the monopod on my belt while shooting. Unfortunately, I lost the belt adapter and could not get a replacement without buying another entire unit. This I did (I found a used one on Amazon for only $10) but the unit came without the needed part! The vendor kindly replaced it with a brand new monopod, so now I have three! Only the one I originally purchased can support the weight of my little point-and-shoot when fully extended-- none is sturdy enough to use with my Canon 30D, except with the belt adapter, which does not require the extra length. The vendor provided wonderful service, but I could not even find a web site on which I could express my concerns about the quality of this product directly to the manufacturer. If someone can find it, please forward my review to them. I prefer that option to griping about it in public, but I seem to have no choice.

Unless your made of money buy a different monopod. The bottom legs do not stay extended under moderate pressure, The whole thing when extended is extremely flimsy.
