Compact, well designed and superbly functional

| I am using this device for my light weight DSLR-like camera, Lumix GH1. This ball head works beautifully in all occasions. In particular, I like the quick (and safe) release mechanism. Easy to mount to and dismount from the tripod. Once it is on, it is quite secure. It works nicely either horizontally or vertically. I recommend this device to all serious photographers working with the new generations of DSLR like camera in Four Thirds format. |
Well-built and easy to use

This is my first ballhead attachment and I'm very impressed. I had no idea this product was available and it was suggested to me in a post regarding tripods here in Amazon that it would help to get photos of buildings or art work straight if I had a ballhead on my tripod that had two bubble levels. Which is why, specifically, I chose this model.
It installed easily on my tripod and my camera installed easily and securely to it. (It also comes with a second attachment shoe with a much larger thread for some other type of camera or equipment). The build seems solid, the movement is smooth, the added weight for my tripod is unnoticeable, the makings are clear (although, for my purposes, I don't need markings) The four knobs are for ball and pan locking, for swivel locking, for ball locking, and for fine tuning. It also comes with brief instructions in various languages and a lot of generic drawings which you won't need unless you have a problem--the whole thing is pretty intuitive.
I've used it twice and, both times, it did help me get more level pictures and I'm very glad I got it. I will never go back to using a tripod without a ballhead (how easily we get spoiled).
The only reason that I deducted a star is that the bubble levels are, under less than perfect lighting conditions, a little difficult to read. They are filled with that usual green liquid you find in bubble levels but, since the glass cylinders are flush against the black ballhead unit, there is no backlighting (or light hitting it from any side other than the front.) This makes locating the bubble a little difficult since there is just a little contrast. This is especially true of the bubble level in the front, the side unit is easier to read. In a well-lit environment and with perfect vision, it's probably not an issue, but I struggled a bit to locate the bubbles. |

Perfect for my job!!!
|
| Review Date: May 27, 2009 |
| Reviewer: O.C. Ron, Orange County CA |
| I was asked to video a graduation for a close friend's daughter. My Canon HD mini-camcorder is light enough to handle, but the picture can be distracting with even the slightest movement. Being the novice cameraman that I am, I purchased the monopod to steady the picture, perfect for events that may have a guest speaker that may speak for 15 or 20 minutes. I haven't used a monopod before and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of use and the sturdy construction of this model. I would recommend this product for anyone videotaping an event, wanting the steadiness of a tripod with the freedom to move. |

Excellent lightweight monopod
|
| Review Date: May 26, 2009 |
| Reviewer: David Allen Holmes, |
| I've been using tri and monopods that I had purchased for use with SLR and DSLR cameras. While these are extremely sturdy there is a weight and size penalty. This little Manfrotto monopod is very light, but remarkably robust. I've used it quite a bit with my superzoom digicam, as well as a DSLR, and it holds up just fine. I recommend it highly. |
Light & Strong enough
|
| Review Date: July 10, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Donald H. Sauret, Apollo Beach, FL USA |
| I use this with my Nikon D90, and find it plenty strong for situations where a tripod is not allowed or just too clumsy to tote. Probably not strong enough to lift the side of your Hummer to change a tire, but to stabilize any camera you can lift, it should be fine. I think weight vs strength ratio is perfect, unless you want to spend $$$ for carbon fiber. Others mentioned the strap tends to slip, which I found to be true as well. I replaced mine with a similar size strip of hook-loop strap. Overall nice product. |
Double Duty!
|
| Review Date: May 29, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Robert Dolan, Thousand Oaks, CA |
On a recent trip to Tuscany, I used this monopod as both a camera stabilizer and a walking stick.
As a camera stabilizer, the Manfretto worked very well -- especially since I attached it to the lightweight Kodak PlaySport.
As a walking stick, the Manfretto worked well, but with two qualifications:
*** The strap does tend to slip.
I solved that problem with the help of Giorgio, who runs the Lauderia in Castellina in Chianti.
With the strap adjusted for my hand, Giorgio applied some electrical tape to the strap.
No more slipping after that.
*** I wore out the foot-pad for the monopod.
Well, it took me a week. But on the eighth day, I 'clicked' when I walked.
I had injured my knee just before the trip, so I was asking the monopod to perform double duty as a cane.
BTW: There was no issue in my taking this 'cane' through LAX security.
Overall, this was a great to have on our trip.
On the way home, it fit easily into my 21" roll-on bag. |
Thought it was a little more solid
|
| Review Date: April 5, 2010 |
| Reviewer: Patrick, Wisonsin |
| This was from Manfrotto so I thought that the metal would be a little more rigid. It seems that it would be easily bent. This does on the other hand make it very light so it is easy to take hiking. I needed it for wedding so that my assistant could hold the flash where it needs to be rather then setup a stand. It works for me we will see this summer how well it does. |

Handy, cool.

| Does what it needs to. I only use it for SD cards so I'm not sure how well it secures others. Simple latching on top sides can be bent in or out if it's too sticky or loose and a little acetone takes the logo down to a less obtrusive grey. |

| The case is made very well and looks very good, but my Memory Stick Duo cards do not fit securely into the holder, and it only fits three cards. If I had it to do over again I would still buy the Targus case...you can't beat the price. |
Targus Aluminum Memory Card Storage Case

| Review Date: December 30, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Old Fool, USA |
| This card case is exactly what I expected and I have not had any problems with it. It is small, durable, and as thin as a matchbook. The one thing I would have liked is space to store the unused chip clips. However, it would need to be twice as thick and would not be a good trade off to me. The price is inexpensive, so it is a Chevy not a Cadillac. If you want more buy the Cadillac. |
Nice, but loose lid
|
| Review Date: July 28, 2007 |
| Reviewer: JC, Harrisburg, PA |
| Works nice. The inserts accomodate a variety of sizes. Only problem is the lid fits loose. With chips in the inserts, and the lid closed, there is enough space between the lid and the insert to allow the chips to fall out of place and become loose within the case. |

In 1970, Chris Bonington and his now-legendary team of mountaineers were the first climbers to tackle a big wall at extreme altitude. Their target was the south face of Nepals Annapurna: 12,000 feet of steep rock and ice leading to a 26, 454-ft. summit. As serious armchair climbers will tell you, Annapurna South Face is better than all but a handful of equally gripping classics. One could also argue that all that has happened in the big mountains in the past 30 years has come out of this expedition and out of this book. Bonington and his teammost of whom subsequently died in the mountainsrepresented a kind of greatest generation of modern mountaineers. They pioneered a new, bolder approach to high altitude climbing, and this book is about how they hit the big time.
